Meet Debra

Meet the founder and driving force behind Diverse Nation as she opens up about her passion for neurodivergent-led design

Why did you start Diverse Nation?

Throughout my many years of living and working worldwide, I constantly faced the challenge of finding a comfortable space where my neurodivergent family and colleagues could truly unwind and rejuvenate. Acknowledging that around 1 billion of the world’s population is neurodivergent and realizing that most accommodation caters solely to neurotypical individuals, I decided to do things differently: to provide unique accommodation founded on psychological design principles that foster mental relaxation through a combination of colours, textures, space, and light, to provide stimulation underload, a great place to chill out for neurodivergent people - places where every single person can benefit.

What did you do professionally before launching Diverse Nation?

I have been in the world of work for over 35 years and have had many roles. I learned how to embrace early mornings and changeable weather in my very early teens as a papergirl before the school day started, and worked on a market stall at weekends. In my late teens I made drinks as a barista and bar manager in the evenings while learning secretarial skills. By day I was selling bow ties, folding curtains, and bagging large quantities of nuts and bolts, juggling multiple jobs and sleeping little. I then did admin work and moved to a legal secretarial role, I’m now just 21 and discovering the glittering loveliness and nightlife of Manchester. I managed to secure a role in one of the world’s largest consultancies setting up a centre of excellence and running a finance department. A few years later, mid-20s, I’m setting up my own small companies and consulting with large organisations in the fabulous heart of London and working and living across Europe. It was during my late 20s when I had my two fabulously neurodivergent children and during my 20s, 30s, and 40s when I undertook 5 degrees whilst juggling a busy work life (and of course my sons) – it was probably at this point when I realised I may be different! I then spent many happy years consulting in the Middle East before returning to live in the UK. I studied further and became a Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Scientist, which enabled me better understand myself, and help to improve the diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, practices, and workspaces of some of the world’s largest organisations.

What would you say are your strongest skills or qualities?

I’m a practising neurodivergent psychologist and I have always had a very analytical brain and OCD tendencies, allowing me to evaluate my environment and establish where I can make positive changes that are naturally balanced. Using this experience alongside my various degrees in Psychology, Philosophy, and Business Administration, I can find the best ways to improve wellbeing by considering what we’d most benefit from and need as humans, how we should be as a supportive society, and how I can practically make these improvements.

“I created Diverse Nation to establish neuroinclusive accommodation as the standard. I want to encourage and empower the neurodivergent and neurotypical to remain wonderfully diverse”

Debra, Founder & CEO, Diverse Nation

What is your ‘why’, that thing that lights you up and drives you every day?

Having lived for most of my younger years on a tired and tough council estate full of lovely people, growing up in a very low-income working-class background before the terms ‘neurodivergent’ and ‘neurodiverse’ even existed, I found that fitting in and finding a comfortable space to live was a bit of a challenge. It made me understand the incredible importance of having somewhere to feel mentally and physically at ease while also learning to accept and celebrate our incredibly complex, individual, and beautiful selves.

I created Diverse Nation to provide embracing and empowering accommodation - I want people to ‘stay diverse’, to reflect my hope that the neurodivergent will stay with Diverse Nation and to encourage us to remain wonderfully diverse.

And finally, Debra, what’s your vision for Diverse Nation?

Our vision is to be the world leader in neuroinclusive short-term accommodation that is truly welcoming for all holiday and business travellers – to provide places that make you feel right at home.
